What it actually means.
SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page. It's the page of results you see after typing a query into Google. A modern SERP includes organic blue-link results, paid ads, the 3-pack, knowledge panels, featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, image carousels, video results, and sometimes shopping or news modules.
In local SEO, the SERP layout matters because the 3-pack often appears above the first organic result. That means rank #1 organic can still get fewer clicks than rank #3 in the 3-pack. The goal isn't just 'rank high' — it's 'occupy the SERP real estate that actually gets clicked.'
SERPs are personalized: location, search history, device, and time of day all influence what you see. Two people searching the same query from the same city can see different results. When you check your rankings, use an incognito window and a location-spoofing tool, or rely on rank-tracking software that simulates a clean session.
