Glossary

Primary category

The single category Google uses to decide which queries your Google Business Profile should rank for.

Also calledGBP primary category
In plain English

What it actually means.

Your Google Business Profile lets you select up to 10 categories. The first one (primary) carries dramatically more weight than the others. Google uses the primary category as the main signal of what your business does, and rankings for queries outside that category are much harder.

Choosing the right primary category is the single highest-leverage decision in local SEO. A cosmetic dental practice with 'Dentist' as primary will struggle to outrank a similar practice with 'Cosmetic Dentist' as primary, even if everything else is equal.

The category list is fixed by Google. You can't invent categories. Pick the most specific category that matches your highest-revenue service. If you don't see your service, see what your top-3 competitors are using.

Watch out

Common mistakes we see.

  • Picking the most general category to 'cover more queries.' Specificity beats breadth.
  • Never revisiting the primary category as your business evolves. Google adds new categories regularly.
